You: A seasoned grants professional with a passion for liberty and a successful track record of securing funding. You’re a talented writer and meticulous editor who also has solid management and supervisory skills. And now you’re looking to lead the grant-seeking efforts of a major organization dedicated to advancing liberty and reining in government overreach. You’re also eager to have a greater impact on the overall direction and success of an organization’s development team.
Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in and passionate for the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.
Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public-interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record in the United States Supreme Court, with 17 victories out of 19 litigated there. We also have more than a hundred active cases across the nation.
PLF is a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game.
Here’s what you get to do in this role:
You will lead PLF’s efforts to secure funding from foundations and other grant makers who share our commitment to advancing individual liberty. You’ll apply your well-honed writing and messaging talents to craft successful proposals and reports tailored to the interests and requirements of the funders. We have a robust stable of current funders providing grants at all levels.
To ensure sufficient financial resources for PLF’s ambitious growth plans, you will also use your considerable knowledge of the pro-liberty movement and likeminded foundations to identify and secure grants from new potential funders.
As the leader of our grants team, you will supervise and mentor current staff, review and approve drafts, oversee a smooth submission and reporting process, and grow the team as needed. You will have the latitude to think big and the resources to execute.
In short, we’re looking for a relentless go-getter who’s passionate about freedom, well-versed in the pro-liberty funding sphere, and who can inspire even greater investment in PLF’s work from grant funders.
Your specific job duties will include:
- Growing support for PLF among grant funders.
- Serving on the Vice President for Development’s leadership team, providing advice and ideas as the team strategizes for future growth and success.
- Drafting grant proposals and reports tailored to the specific needs and interests of each grant funder.
- Supervising and mentoring current grant-writing staff. This includes assigning projects, reviewing drafts, helping to keep the drafting/reviewing process moving forward, and nurturing the professional growth of team members.
- Identifying, cultivating, and securing grants from potential new funders.
This role is ideal for someone with:
- Five or more years of successfully securing grant funding. Familiarity with funders in the pro-liberty space is especially helpful.
- Two or more years of supervisory experience, including demonstrated ability to manage and inspire staff.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills—a real stickler for conceptual and grammatical rigor who is adept at translating complex ideas into accessible, persuasive copy.
- Outstanding organizational skills, with a proven ability to envision, execute, and evaluate plans and processes. The ideal candidate will have a bias for action and drive projects to successful, timely completion.
- Knowledge of, and passion for, the ideas of freedom and individual liberty.
