Chief Executive Officer -Evergreen Freedom Foundation – Olympia, WA
The Chief Executive Officer for the Evergreen Freedom Foundation is responsible for advancing the Freedom Foundation’s mission and growing the organization. The CEO operates under the supervision of a Board of Trustees and provides overall direction and execution of the Freedom Foundation’s operations and strategic plans.
The CEO is responsible for advancing/overseeing programs in these major categories: strategic and policy direction, membership, senior staff recruitment, staff training, marketing and outreach, and revenue.
The CEO must keep faith with EFF’s mission and its investors. He or she must have financial, personnel and oversight skills suitable for a sizable staff and budget. The CEO must be professional in appearance and possess the ability to communicate excellently and effectively to important EFF constituencies.
General Responsibilities
- Determine direction and overall strategy for the Freedom Foundation
- Keep programs and related activities centered on delivering the principal strategies
- Ensure that the Foundation’s research and communications products remain reliable and of high quality in look, content and persuasiveness
- Maintain and increase respect from peers and community leaders
- Lead the preparations for annual strategic positioning and operations planning
- Maintain good, consistent communications with Foundation Trustees
- Maintain high professional standards in appearance and written and oral communications
- Provide a credible and persuasive public presence for the Foundation, both in-state and nationally
Staff Responsibilities
- Hire and/or oversee the hiring of excellent staff capable of executing objectives
- Work closely with the COO to ensure good operations execution
- Keep senior employee turnover low and morale high. Position senior staff in roles that allow them to utilize their strengths
- Train/mentor/develop senior staff; ensure that senior staff does the same for employees under their supervision
Measurement and Execution Responsibilities
- Conduct regular reviews of senior staff under direct supervision
- Work with COO to 1) ensure alignment of mission, principles, projects, staff training, and evaluation, and 2) to measure the outcomes of projects, continually refining evaluation instruments to measure what’s most important
Development and Budget Responsibilities
- Work with COO to build an annual budget that aligns with objectives, is built on realistic assumptions, and provides enough flexibility for the Foundation to realign resources if necessary
- Work with the Development team and oversee the proper construction of the annual revenue-raising plan as well as perpetuation funds and estate planning
- Engage in major donor solicitation as defined by the plan
- Work with COO to keep the Foundation’s overhead and operations costs focused, lean and in the black
QUALIFICATIONS: Professional and personal
- Unqualified commitment to the mission and vision of the Freedom Foundation
- Experience leading a similar or larger-sized organization, or the equivalent, with a proven track record of success
- A servant-leader approach to staff and investors, with a track record of accomplishing goals in a team-oriented environment
- No political or personal baggage counterproductive to the Foundation’s mission
- Good public presence; persuasive communication skills, both written and oral
- Familiarity with new communications technologies and an understanding of how they can be utilized effectively
- A desire for external communications, including public speaking. Demonstrated ability to play an integral role in fundraising campaigns, including building lasting relationships with donors
- Understanding of and experience in marketing messages and products, including a demonstrated ability to create successful large-scale plans
- Ability to accurately assess the political and policy landscape
- Capable of effective networking with peers
- Ability to travel, both in-state and nationally
