About the Role
The James Madison Institute seeks a full-time media relations manager to communicate the organization’s objectives and increase JMI’s brand with the media. Candidates for the position of media relations manager should be able to demonstrate an understanding of public policy from a free-market perspective, with special emphasis on the issues facing the state of Florida. Candidates must be energetic in promoting the goals and views of The James Madison Institute (JMI) with the goal of increasing JMI’s media presence.
The Media Relations Manager will report to the Senior Vice President. This is an in-office role, based in Tallahassee, FL.
Responsibilities:
- Draft press releases, talking points, op-eds, and other news-related information
- Manage media requests, respond to inquiries, and build relationships with reporters in Florida and at the national level
- Work with the communications team to develop and implement a communications strategy and pitch stories to reporters
- Coordinate press events and manage media coverage
- Update the Institute’s website with media coverage and press releases
- Manage the publication calendar and interface with the graphic designer on publication layouts
- Oversee the bi-annual JMI Messenger Newsletter
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience working with the media
- Internship experience will be considered
- Strong written and verbal communications skills
- Ability to travel on occasion, less than 10%
- Ability to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines
- Strong work ethic, highly self-motivated with attention to detail and ability to be a team player
- Willingness to perform all tasks with a positive attitude and contribute to the team by performing miscellaneous tasks as needed/directed
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in communications, public relations, journalism or related
Compensation:
Salary is $55,000-$60,000, dependent upon the selected applicant’s experience and qualifications, with generous incentives including bonus opportunities. JMI also offers an equally competitive benefits package.
