The Fairness Center is a national nonprofit, public interest law firm that provides free legal services to those hurt by public-sector union officials. Above all, we advocate for our clients’ goals in both the court of law and the court of public opinion. Our clients are public employees and others defending their constitutional rights, fighting unfair representation, or demanding accountability from union officials for various forms of discrimination.
Based in Harrisburg, PA, Albany, NY, or remotely, the Director of Media Relations serves as the Fairness Center’s primary media contact and collaborates with the Vice President of Communications to ensure the firm’s clients accomplish their goals in the court of public opinion. Candidates should have exceptional writing and editing skills, keen attention to detail, and be proactive self-starters.
Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are to be executed in close collaboration with the Vice President of Communications, to whom the Director reports.
- Media Relations: Execute short- and long-term strategies to achieve clients’ goals in the media.

- Build and maintain relationships with members of the media to secure favorable coverage of clients’ litigation in local, state, and national media, including TV, radio, and print
- Engage influencers on digital platforms to expand the reach of our clients’ stories to podcasts, newsletters, and social media
- Serve as primary media contact for the firm, promptly handling media inquiries
- Distill complex litigation into understandable, media-friendly messages
- Draft and send news releases and targeted pitches
- Monitor media stories related to public-sector labor law and identify opportunities for our clients to be part of the discussion
- Prep clients and attorneys for media interviews
- Develop effective relationships with clients from a variety of backgrounds
- Record and analyze the firm’s media presence
- Writing & Editing: Tell clients’ stories to key audiences, including donors, clients, media figures, and potential clients.

- Draft opinion articles for clients and attorneys that place clients at the center of their stories
- Write narratives for the firm’s website, fairnesscenter.org
- Draft stakeholder emails
- Edit, proofread, and refine others’ work
Essential Characteristics
The Director must demonstrate exceptional written communication skills and a rigorous attention to detail. People skills and professionalism are key, as the Director will be the first point of contact for journalists and frequently interact with clients. Creativity, drive, and a commitment to excellence are vital to success in this role.
Qualifications
- 5 or more years of experience in a writing, communications, public relations, or related role
- Commitment to the Fairness Center’s mission
- Bachelor’s degree required
