About the News Editor Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced News Editor to manage the Napolitan News Service site and other content platforms. The News Editor will be responsible for coordinating all content on our site, developing and implementing content strategies, building and managing a team of writers, and ensuring high-quality, timely news delivery. This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of the news landscape.
The News Editor will report directly to the Executive Director. This is a full-time, virtual position that can be based anywhere in the United States. Domestic travel of up to 10% for meetings and conferences is required. Because of the nature of the news cycle, occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
Responsibilities
- Content Coordination: Oversee all aspects of content creation, from ideation to publication. Develop and manage an editorial calendar to ensure a consistent flow of news content.
- Content Creation: Write engaging and insightful content for Napolitan News Service. At times, act as the voice of Napolitan Institute for multimedia content or external interviews.
- Team Building and Management: Recruit, train, and manage a team of freelance and/or staff writers. Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment. Provide constructive feedback and guidance to writers to improve their skills.
- Content and Polling Strategy: Develop and implement content strategies that align with the organization’s goals. Identify trending topics and ensure coverage is relevant and timely. Coordinate with RMG Research on daily polling topics and help in drafting questions.
- Editing and Quality Control: Edit and proofread articles to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to style guidelines. Maintain high editorial standards and uphold journalistic integrity. Implement a style guide and strengthen the voice of the Napolitan Institute.
- Build Media Affiliate Program: Create an engaging media affiliate program to ensure our data is at the forefront of all breaking news in both legacy and non-traditional media.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other departments to maximize content reach and engagement.
- Performance Monitoring: Track content performance metrics and use data to inform content decisions and optimize strategies.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of proven experience as a news editor or in a similar role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
- Strong editorial judgment, data analytics and news sense.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Experience building and managing a team of writers.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of SEO best practices and digital media.
- Passion for news and a commitment to Napolitan Institute’s mission.
Compensation
The projected salary range for this role is $95,000-$110,000, plus benefits package. This salary is contingent upon the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate.
