About the Role
Mountain States Legal Foundation (MSLF) seeks a passionate, results-driven Major Gifts Officer to cultivate, steward, and expand relationships with major donors and foundations. This role will employ a strategic moves management approach to ensure donor engagement, retention, and growth. The Major Gifts Officer will also travel extensively to meet with donors and prospective supporters across the Mountain States region and beyond, serving as an ambassador for MSLF’s mission of defending individual liberty, property rights, and limited government. This person will report to the Director of Fundraising. This is a full-time, in office position at the MSLF headquarters in Lakewood, CO.
Key Responsibilities
Donor Cultivation and Stewardship
- Manage a portfolio of 75–125 major donors and prospects, fostering meaningful relationships to ensure long-term support.
- Develop and execute individualized donor engagement plans using the moves management system to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors.
- Regularly communicate MSLF’s impact through personalized updates, thank-you notes, calls, and donor reports.
- Collaborate with the Communications team to craft tailored materials, proposals, and donor correspondence.
Donor Solicitation and Fundraising Strategy
- Work with the Development team to identify potential major donors and foundation prospects through research and data analysis.
- Secure significant contributions by making compelling asks in person, virtually, and in writing.
- Create and achieve annual fundraising goals in alignment with MSLF’s strategic priorities.
Travel and External Engagement
- Travel extensively (30–50% of the time) to meet with donors, prospects, and foundation representatives.
- Represent MSLF at key events, conferences, and donor functions to build and strengthen relationships.
Collaboration and Reporting
- Coordinate with the Development team to ensure alignment of fundraising efforts.
- Maintain meticulous records of donor interactions and plans in the CRM system.
- Provide regular updates and progress reports to leadership on fundraising activity and outcomes.
Qualifications
Required
- 2+ years of proven experience in major gift fundraising, including successful solicitations of $10,000+ gifts.
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to connect with donors, board members, and colleagues.
- Knowledge of moves management and demonstrated success in its application.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate MSLF’s mission and impact effectively.
- A willingness to travel extensively and work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
Preferred
- Familiarity with legal, constitutional, or property rights issues.
- Experience working with nonprofit organizations.
- Proficiency with CRM Virtuous and Microsoft Office Suite.
Compensation
The projected salary range for this role is $90,000.00 – $100,000.00, contingent upon the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate. We are also willing to explore a lower range for a promising, less experienced candidate. Mountain States compensation package includes a 403(b)-retirement plan (with MSLF making a discretionary match each year), generous health benefits, employer-paid dental plan, vacation and sick days, and opportunities for professional growth and development.
