The Leadership Institute (LI) is a 501 (c)(3) organization that was founded in 1979 by its president, Morton C. Blackwell. LI provides training in campaigns, fundraising, grassroots organizing, youth politics, and communications. The Institute teaches conservatives of all ages how to succeed in politics, government, and the media. Since 1979, LI has trained more than 200,000 conservative activists, leaders, and students. The Institute’s unique college campus network has grown to more than 1,700 conservative campus groups and newspapers.
About the Role
The Leadership Institute is hiring a Deputy Editor for its campus news website Campus Reform (campusreform.org). As America’s leading source for conservative college news, Campus Reform serves as a watchdog to our country’s higher education system, with a mission to expose liberal bias and abuse on college campuses.
The Deputy Editor will oversee a mix of editorial, media, and operational responsibilities that include brand management, social media strategy, and longform reporting projects. The Deputy Editor will ensure the newsroom’s daily productivity while overseeing long-term projects assigned by the Editor in Chief. They may also have opportunities to represent Campus Reform on local and national television, radio, and podcast interviews.
This is a senior-level role that reports to the Editor in Chief. They will also manage approximately one to four individuals.
This is a full-time position that can be based virtually anywhere in the US. Preference will be given to candidates who can work from our Arlington, VA office. Remote staff must work regular hours aligned with Eastern Time and are expected to travel to the Arlington office 2–3 times per year for team gatherings and meetings.
Responsibilities
- Support the Editor in Chief with public relations initiatives and media placement efforts
- Track education policy, news, and events
- Write daily news copy for the Campus Reform website, social media, and emails
- Grow web traffic and social media engagement
- Direct longform and investigative journalism projects
- Represent Campus Reform on national and local media outlets
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional work experience in media, journalism or communications
- Ability to be accessible in the evenings and weekends as the news cycle demands
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively on camera
- Proficiency in identifying and producing newsworthy content
- Strict adherence to journalism rules and ethics
- A strong understanding of conservative politics and Campus Reform’s mission
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Avid consumer of national news
- Philosophical alignment with and passion for Leadership Institute/Campus Reform’s mission
- Willingness to travel up to 5%
Desired Qualifications
- Experience reporting on higher education issues
- Experience in broadcast media
- Previous project management experience
