The James Madison Institute (JMI) is a Florida-based research and educational organization whose ideas are rooted in a belief in the U.S. Constitution, limited government, economic freedom, federalism and individual liberty coupled with personal responsibility. The Institute’s mission is to keep the citizens of Florida informed about their government and to shape our state’s future through the advancement of practical free-market ideas on public policy issues.
Since its inception in 1987, the Institute has remained independent, non-profit and non-partisan. It makes no attempt to aid or hinder the passage of legislation nor does it accept government funds or respond to special pleadings from any sector.
About the Role
JMI is seeking a Vice President of Advancement to oversee the development team. Candidates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of public policy from a free-market perspective, with special emphasis on the issues facing the state of Florida. This person must be energetic in promoting the goals and views of JMI with a view to increasing its private funding. He or she should have the skills required to communicate clearly through spoken and written word.
The Vice President of Advancement will be expected to build new relationships with individuals and also cultivate existing ones for the purpose of securing donations. This person will also develop a strategic plan to build the organization’s membership and increase JMI’s brand among members.
This role reports to the President and CEO and can be executed from the Tallahassee office or virtually anywhere in Florida.
Responsibilities
The Vice President of Advancement will be responsible for programs and long-term strategies to increase JMI’s funding. The duties include:
- Fundraising development and overall growth of the organization via individual, corporate and event giving
- Oversight and management of all staff in the development department
- Oversight of current direct-mail campaign and future growth of direct-mail opportunities and prospecting
- Increasing attendance and contributions to annual events including the Tallahassee annual dinner Naples annual dinner, regional events, Tech Summit, vision meetings, etc.
- Establishment and oversight of an endowment and planned giving campaign
- Oversight of any future capital campaigns and other unique fundraising campaigns
- Possible speaking engagements on behalf of JMI at community organizations, events and/or meetings
- Development of mutually beneficial working relationships with other state and national policy organizations and foundations
- Performance of other assigned duties as needed and appropriate
- Work with the JMI Policy and Communications leadership to grow the brand while increasing funding opportunities
Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of fundraising experience preferred
- Strong alignment with and understanding of the mission of JMI
- Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines
- Willingness to travel approximately 40-50% mostly within the state of Florida
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office software suite, specifically Word and Outlook
- Strong work ethic, highly self-motivated with attention to detail and ability to be a team player
- Familiarity with membership database programs
- Willingness to perform all tasks with a positive attitude and contribute to the team

- Bachelor’s Degree required
Compensation
Salary is competitive; negotiable dependent upon the selected applicant’s experience and qualifications, with generous incentives including bonus opportunities. JMI also offers an equally competitive benefits package.
