Thrive Media (ThriveSA) is a new media initiative designed to bring a fresh voice to local news in San Antonio and positively influence policy. ThriveSA will explicitly advocate a pro-growth, pro-market perspective in local discourse, aiming to drive better policies and build a stronger city. It will serve as a unique voice, challenging the status quo in both governance and media coverage.
Role Overview
ThriveSA is backed by a consortium of civic and business leaders. While many supporters will contribute content and insights, the Executive Director will be the public face of the initiative, leading it from day one and shaping the organization’s direction and future.
In the start-up phase, the goal is to produce 1-2 weekly pieces that are regularly read by the 500-1,000 key individuals who influence city policy. Once a readership base is established, the Executive Director will expand ThriveSA into a broader news source, delving deeper into policy and collaborating with national think tanks and policy forums to promote better urban policies.
Content is at the heart of ThriveSA, and the Executive Director will play a crucial role in delivering thoughtful analysis and fresh perspectives. ThriveSA’s perspective will be insightful yet accessible, ensuring that concerned citizens, policymakers, and business leaders find value in its content.
Seed funding has been secured, allowing the Executive Director to focus on launching and growing the organization.
While ThriveSA is San Antonio-focused, the Executive Director can work remotely from anywhere in the country. However, travel to San Antonio will be required to establish credibility with key leaders and influencers.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive content creation – Write, edit, and engage contributors.
- Perform policy analysis – In the early stages, original research will be limited; instead, the Executive Director will leverage existing data and perspectives to reframe key local issues.
- Publish and promote content via Substack.
- Engage the core audience and build a strong readership.
- Work with the Board to shape the organization’s future, including staff, strategic direction, and new initiatives.
- Act as the founder, driving force, and public face of ThriveSA.
- Assist with charter membership growth ($500/year) to foster broad-based stakeholder engagement (note: these funds will not be needed for the base budget).
- Oversee budget, manage vendors, and ensure tax and nonprofit compliance.
- Grow readership through social media, video commentary, and other engagement strategies.
- Collaborate with the Board, staff, and consultants to develop a long-term, sustainable funding model.
Profile & Skills
- 5+ years of relevant experience preferred (unconventional backgrounds will also be considered).
- Strong interest and fluency in urban policy and free-market/supply-side economics.
- Exceptional writing skills with the ability to write persuasively.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with a passion for redefining local news in the digital media landscape.
