Citizens’ Council for Health Freedom (CCHF) is a non-partisan, free-market organization that promotes policy ideas consistent with the principles of limited government, individual liberty and free markets. Recognized as the leading free-market voice for patient-centered care and medical privacy rights, CCHF’s primary area of focus is health care policy, with an emphasis on freedom, free-markets and the medical privacy rights that protect patient and doctor freedom.
Position Description
Citizens’ Council for Health Freedom seeks a Communications Specialist to plan and execute CCHF’s communications, marketing and outreach strategy, and activities. This person will work closely with CCHF’s president, Director of Programs, and Legislative and Policy Manager to maximize the publicity and earned media of each project and initiative.
Qualified candidates must have a passionate commitment to free-market principles and have the skills and experience required to generate maximum media coverage for CCHF and its projects, including running campaigns to create movements that lead to policy changes. The Communications Specialist will also spearhead the promotions and marketing for CCHF’s various projects and campaigns.
Salary will be commensurate with experience for all candidates. CCHF is located in St. Paul, Minnesota but also works at the national level and in other states. This role is preferably based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, but we are open to considering exceptional candidates in the United States for remote work.
Responsibilities
- Build the quality and integrity of CCHF’s brand and messaging
- Develop creative, engaging responses to shape public opinion and advance CCHF ideas
- Speak in the voice of CCHF in all outgoing communications
- Develop and implement CCHF’s strategic communications plan
- Write professional, compelling, and “bulletproof” press releases, articles, and op-eds that will grab the attention of the reader, hold up to scrutiny, and deliver maximum impact
- Manage press releases using Cision platform, create new and manage established contacts with media members through pitching and building relationships to grow media coverage
- Schedule television, podcast, print media, and radio interviews, monitor media requests
- Develop CCHF’s new podcast program (build from scratch)
- Manage the weekly posting of the “Health Freedom Minute” with our radio partners
- Edit / copy edit CCHF’s commentaries, postings, publications, and letters
- Create monthly eNews distribution emails (Active Campaign) and monthly donor emails
- Produce (write articles for and design) quarterly hardcopy newsletter
- Coordinate CCHF’s educational and information campaigns
- Manage CCHF’s Website, Twitter, Facebook, Hootsuite, and other new-media accounts, including creating content, monitoring activity, and gathering statistical information
- Assist with event coordination and messaging for fundraising campaigns
- Facilitate X spaces and webinars
- Stay up-to-date on latest communication trends and bring potential opportunities forward
- Provide Comms Reports and statistics for meetings of the Board of Directors
- Other responsibilities as determined by the president
Desired Qualifications
- 3+ years of communications/policy experience with a history of earning media coverage and creating innovative ways to turn policy ideas into stories and events that change public opinion
- Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, Marketing, or related field
- Proven and exceptional writing ability, superior self-editing, and well-established copy-editing skills, which, without exception, require little to no editing of the end product.
- Proven ability to strategize with new/fresh ideas, and then implement the plan/project.
- Ability to translate detailed and dry policy ideas into stories and PR events that earn news coverage
- Ability to make complex policy concepts easily understandable to the American public
- Willingness to work outside of the 9-5 window occasionally, when needed to secure media coverage and accomplish CCHF’s goals
- Demonstrates efficient use of time with a high ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Entrepreneurial spirit, self-starter, creative idea-generator
- Positive attitude and eagerness to work as an influential member of our team
- Ability to travel occasionally (1-3 times/year for conferences/event)
- Experience with audio/visual media, such as podcasts and reels, a plus
- Experience with graphic design (example: Adobe InDesign or Canva) a plus
- Established national and/or Minnesota media contacts are a plus
- Knowledge of health care policy is a plus
