About the Role
The Acton Institute seeks an experienced Director of Communications and Marketing to develop and execute Acton’s communications, marketing, public relations and media services. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a communications professional interested in extending our ideas and mission. As Director of Communications and Marketing, your primary responsibility is to amplify Acton’s voice and expand Acton’s influence, audience, and brand across the U.S. and internationally. In service to other departments, this role manages Acton’s website, email communications, and social media; amplifies and promotes the voices of Acton’s president, scholars, and affiliates; markets and promotes Acton’s media, events, products, and resources. Essential to this role is an understanding of Acton’s educational mission and an appreciation of Acton’s principled and winsome tone and timing.
This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer at Acton. This is a full-time exempt position located in Grand Rapids, MI and includes an attractive and competitive compensation & benefit package. For the right candidate Acton will consider a senior job title commensurate with experience. Acton does allow staff to work from home 1-2 days/week, however for the exceptional candidate we are open to a remote working arrangement for this position.
Job Skills and Requirements:
- An understanding and passion for Acton’s mission and the ability to communicate the mission and ideas to a diverse audience, with an educational and winsome mindset.
- A demonstrated ability to engage collegially and collaborate across departments to support all Acton Institute’s activities.
- The ability to effectively communicate to Christian audiences and other religious traditions.
- Excellent leadership and management skills to lead, inspire, and develop staff; this role will supervise 4-5 team members
- Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills to creatively convey and advance the synthesis of faith and freedom.
- Skillset to lead a team of editors, marketers, web developers, and media production specialists.
- Experience with digital / social media, and the ability to successfully promote Acton’s content.
- A familiarity with major personalities and institutions in the liberty and conservative movement.
- Strong fiscal and decision-making skills needed to oversee communication budgets and results, in a manner that captures key metrics and enables continuous improvement in our processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to Acton’s mission and core principles.
- Seven or more years of experience with a successful track record in a similar role.
- A positive workstyle and commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams.
- Professional decorum, demeanor and behavior at all times.
- Respect for coworkers and all Acton guests and personnel and works as a team player with all members of the organization.
- Experience promoting events, publications, and scholarly activity.
- Excellent speaking, analytical, and writing skills, with experience editing and proofreading.
- Ability to manage multiple short- and long-term projects.
- Experience with CRM tools, databases, and MS Office applications.
The role requires:
- That you are currently legally authorized to work in the USA for any employer
- Approximately 10-15% travel; virtual candidates will have higher travel expectations for in-person visits to the office
