About the Role
MSLF seeks a highly motivated Director of Development Strategy to help lead the organization’s fundraising efforts, manage key development staff, and oversee donor database operations and event coordination. This role will be responsible for driving both strategic and tactical elements of MSLF’s fundraising, including the execution of direct mail and digital campaigns, ensuring donor engagement, and preparing strategic plans and budgets. The Director of Development Strategy will play a key role in achieving MSLF’s financial goals and reporting progress to the board and Development Resource Committee.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in nonprofit fundraising, staff management, and donor relations and an unwavering commitment to MSLF’s mission. This is a full-time role based in-office in Lakewood, Colorado. MSLF staff are able to work from home 1 day/week.
Responsibilities:
- Staff Management: Lead and oversee members of/components of the Development team, including Development Assistant, Prospect Researcher, and Events Manager. Set individual metrics, conduct annual performance reviews, and ensure the team is on track to meet quarterly and annual fundraising goals.
- Fundraising Leadership: Manage major fundraising efforts, including direct mail campaigns, digital campaigns (in coordination with contractors), and major gift solicitations. Maintain a small portfolio of approximately 50 major donors, using moves management to cultivate relationships and secure gifts.
- Donor Database Management: Oversee the Virtuous donor database to ensure accurate and timely entry of donor information. Coordinate with staff to maintain database cleanliness and collaborate with contractors for system updates and renewals.
- Event Coordination: Provide guidance to the Events Manager to plan and execute events, including logistics, marketing, and materials preparation. Ensure events align with overall fundraising goals and contribute to donor engagement strategies.
- Strategic Planning & Budgeting: Lead the preparation of biannual strategic plans and annual budgets for this position’s primary areas of responsibility. Advise on the overall plan and budget for the Development Team. Manage the department’s expenses to align with the organization’s financial growth goals.
- Board Reporting & Committee Leadership: Prepare and present monthly board reports on fundraising activities. Collaborate on the Development Resource Committee agenda, providing insights on staffing, campaign performance, and upcoming fundraising efforts.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in nonprofit development or fundraising, with a proven track record in major gifts, campaign management, and donor relations.
- Strong alignment with MSLF’s mission.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing staff and setting team goals.
- Proficiency in donor databases (experience with Virtuous is a plus), digital fundraising, and event planning.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross-departmentally and with external contractors.
- Strong strategic planning and budgeting experience, with an ability to drive results while managing financial constraints.
Compensation
The projected salary range for this role is $110,000-$115,000, contingent upon the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate. We are also willing to explore higher compensation for an exceptional candidate or a lower range for a promising, less experienced candidate.
