CEI is a non-profit public policy organization dedicated to advancing the principles of limited government, free enterprise, and individual liberty. We believe economic freedom is essential for entrepreneurship, innovation, and prosperity to flourish. CEI pursues a full-service approach to advancing public policy, which includes conducting original scholarly research, active communications campaigns, direct advocacy with policymakers, and litigation. Founded in 1984, CEI has grown into an effective advocate for freedom on a wide range of critical policy issues, including technology, telecommunications, free market environmentalism, business and finance, and food and drug regulation.
About the Role
CEI is seeking a visionary and dynamic Senior Fellow to lead our work on the Federal Reserve, monetary policy, and agency reform. This is a high-impact role for an experienced thinker and communicator who can shape public understanding of central banking and champion a market-oriented monetary future. The ideal candidate is not just a critic of Fed structure, responsibilities, and policy, but a builder of coalitions, a mentor to younger scholars, and a future intellectual star of the free market movement.
This position is designed for someone ready to become the public face of Federal Reserve reform—capable of producing original scholarship, engaging with policymakers, and commanding media attention. You will work closely with CEI’s leadership and policy teams to ensure Fed reform is part of a broader strategy for restoring economic liberty.
The ideal candidate will work from CEI’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Virtual work scenarios will be considered for exceptional candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Thought Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and articulate a bold free-market vision for monetary policy, and proposals to reform the Federal Reserve’s role as regulator, reduce moral hazard in the financial system, and explore alternatives like currency competition or rules-based regimes.
- Provide intellectual leadership alongside colleagues for CEI’s financial regulatory program, mentoring junior staff and guiding research priorities.
- Policy Engagement
- Brief Members of Congress, agency staff, and key stakeholders on monetary and central banking issues.
- Build and lead coalitions across the liberty movement to push back against mission creep at the Fed and promote market-based reforms.
- Public Commentary
- Serve as CEI’s primary spokesperson on monetary issues, regularly appearing in media (print, broadcast, digital) to respond to Fed actions, inflation data, and regulatory developments.
- Publish op-eds, long-form articles, and research papers that challenge conventional economic narratives and advance CEI’s market-oriented approach.
- Institutional Impact
- Represent CEI at major conferences, symposia, and debates.
- Cultivate relationships with journalists, academics, Hill staff, and allied institutions to amplify CEI’s voice in monetary policy debates.
Qualifications
- At least 7–10 years of relevant experience in research, policy, academia, public affairs, or financial journalism.
- PhD in economics, master’s in economics, or MBA or equivalent professional experience.
- Deep understanding of monetary economics, central banking, and financial regulation, grounded in Austrian or classical liberal traditions.
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality written work and offer timely commentary on fast-moving policy developments.
- Outstanding public communication skills, with a track record of media appearances, Hill engagement, or public speaking.
- Clear commitment to free-market principles and the intellectual heritage of thinkers like F.A. Hayek, Milton Friedman, and James Buchanan.
Preferred Traits
- Existing profile or demonstrated potential to become a nationally recognized voice on the Fed and monetary reform.
- Comfort engaging with a wide range of audiences, from grassroots advocates to senior policymakers.
- Strategic thinker who sees monetary reform as essential to CEI’s broader mission of economic liberty.
