About The Beacon Center of Tennessee:

The Beacon Center is Tennessee’s premier free market public policy organization and public interest law firm. Beacon is pound for pound the most effective and efficient state-level public interest organization on the planet. With a staff of just a dozen (and a legal staff of just two), Beacon has achieved remarkable legal and policy victories that have empowered Tennesseans to reclaim their freedoms. Our legal accomplishments in just the last two years include:

  • Obtained a $1.4 million settlement for property owners in a class action lawsuit against Nashville’s stormwater fee. For our work in this case, Beacon earned the State Policy Network’s Bob Williams Award for best state-based litigation in 2025.
  • Filed a petition for certiorari to the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of a builder and nonprofit school in a case that would make it easier for property owners to receive compensation for permit delays.
  • Represented innovative online auctioneers in a First Amendment challenge to Tennessee’s online auction law in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
  • Defended the family of baseball legend Roberto Clemente in a property rights case against Puerto Rico’s trademark theft in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
  • Represented award-winning food truck entrepreneurs in a successful lawsuit leading to the repeal of Mt. Juliet’s $100 per day permit fee for food trucks.
  • Worked alongside a national organization in striking down Nashville’s home business restrictions and defending Tennessee’s school choice program, which Beacon’s policy team helped establish.

About the Role:

Beacon is not done achieving victory for our clients. We’re looking for an energetic and liberty minded Attorney to help us defend the constitutional rights of even more individuals in Tennessee and across the United States. This Attorney must be motivated and able to generate high-quality work in a fast-paced environment. This Attorney must be entrepreneurial: someone who is willing to take ownership of projects and exercise sound judgment to solve problems. He or she must be ideologically aligned. We believe that the principles of free markets, individual liberty, and limited government enshrined in the Tennessee and U.S. Constitutions are the foundation of a prosperous and opportunity-laden society. He or she should, too.

The Attorney should be optimistic. We expect to deliver big wins for our clients and constitutional principles over the next few years—in federal courts, in Tennessee courts, in the Tennessee Supreme Court, and in the Supreme Court of the United States. Our new Attorney should see this position as a terrific opportunity to play a big role in these cases, including developing them, drafting the legal documents, taking depositions, arguing in court, and promoting them in the court of public opinion. We have an office in Nashville but offer a hybrid and fully virtual work environment. Team members choose the work location that is best for each day, whether it be working from the office, at home, or some combination thereof.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Research laws, legal issues, and speak with Tennesseans to develop cases that advance Beacon’s mission.
  • Litigate cases that further Tennesseans’ economic liberty and property rights. This includes drafting complaints and motions, drafting and responding to written discovery, taking and defending depositions, and presenting oral arguments.
  • Speak on behalf of Beacon in media interviews and write op-eds and blog posts about our cases and principles.
  • Collaborate with Beacon team members in other departments to advance overlapping priorities.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor from accredited law school.
  • License to practice law in Tennessee or ability to become promptly licensed in the state.
  • Excellent writing ability, oral communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Affinity for liberty and free market principles.
  • Collegial attitude, strong work ethic, and good sense of humor.
  • Willingness to travel.

Preferences:

  • Experience in the liberty movement, particularly in public interest litigation.
  • Two to five years of experience, including first-chair experience in evidentiary hearings, depositions, and preferably some appellate experience.
  • Located in Nashville, Tennessee or surrounding area.

How to Apply:

Qualified candidates should submit the following application materials (in order) in one PDF document:

  • Cover letter including an introductory paragraph describing three distinct reasons you are drawn to The Beacon Center’s  mission and how you came to those beliefs. Be sure to include at least one specific issue or case that resonates with you.
  • Resume
  • At least one writing sample
