Organization: The Philanthropy Roundtable is a well-established organization in the philanthropic sector, serving as an educational resource for hundreds of donors and foundation leaders. Its mission is to foster excellence in philanthropy, protect philanthropic freedom, and help donors advance liberty, opportunity, and personal responsibility.
The Roundtable is undergoing an exciting period of change. In 2019, the board of directors approved a new strategic plan that outlines an ambitious vision to build and sustain a vibrant American philanthropic movement that strengthens our free society. A new President and CEO will take the helm on June 1, and the Roundtable is actively recruiting a collaborative and entrepreneurial senior management team to execute the vision of the board and grow the reach and influence of the organization.
Since 1991, The Philanthropy Roundtable has served individual philanthropists and foundations that are refining their philanthropic strategies to maximize the impact of their resources, as well as emerging donors and entrepreneurs who are developing their philanthropic plans. The Roundtable is the leading organization in the United States focused on promoting and defending the power of private giving and the means to create wealth to make charitable giving possible.
Job Summary: Reporting to the President and CEO, the Vice President of Marketing and Communications serves as a member of the senior leadership team and is an important voice in making strategic decisions for the organization. The Vice President will collaborate with other senior leaders to raise the profile of the organization amongst its target audiences as it pursues its mission so that the Roundtable is recognized as the leading champion of philanthropic freedom and is the trusted resource for philanthropists who support our principles.
The Vice President will create and steward a cohesive voice for the organization that applies to all programs and facets of the organization. The goal of all outreach, be it with the media, policy makers, philanthropists, or donors, will point back to the mission of the Roundtable and the organization’s unique perspective in the field of philanthropy.
The Vice President will dramatically grow the outreach of the organization to ensure that the Roundtable is communicating consistently and effectively with its current audience of foundation leaders and board members while also engaging the new audiences outlined in the strategic plan including larger numbers of individual philanthropists and wealth advisors.
It is also vital that the Roundtable establish a media relations strategy and cultivate relationships with members of the media and public leaders to become a resource on sharing the importance of philanthropic freedom and the value of philanthropy and wealth creation as a means of support civil society.
The new Vice President will be entrepreneurial and ambitious with a strong vision of how to raise visibility and public recognition of the organization. Top candidates will have a track record for creating and leading robust marketing and communication efforts, strong existing relationships with the media, a natural inclination to tell the Roundtable’s story, and a willingness to foster a collaborative culture across the organization.
The ideal candidate will be based in The Philanthropy Roundtable’s downtown Washington, D.C. office. Exceptionally strong candidates working virtually from elsewhere with frequent travel to Washington, D.C. will also be considered.
Job Duties: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Create and implement annual marketing and communication plans that identify powerful, innovative, and original ways to promote the Roundtable’s mission and its work
- Oversee, mentor, and hire talented marketing professionals; the current team consists of three staff members, but this number is expected to grow
- Develop strategies to drive traffic to the website, keep the website fresh and relevant, and utilize analytical tools to optimize the organization’s online presence, including social media and email marketing
- Build the organization’s media outreach capabilities to ensure placement of op-eds in top news outlets and publications and make the Roundtable a first stop for journalists writing about philanthropy and civil society
- Serve as one of a few spokespersons for the organization and help prepare others, as needed, who will interact with the media
- Drive promotion efforts of Roundtable program offerings, including conferences, through the creation and dissemination of marketing collateral
- Collaborate with the development team to develop consistent messaging and collateral material used for serving members and in fundraising
- Work closely with internal staff and consultants to improve database and other systems for marketing and communication needs
- Develop department budget and monitor expenses
- Minimum of ten years of experience in marketing, communications, public or media relations
- Demonstrable track record of creating ambitious marketing campaigns with defined goals and successfully achieving measurable results
- Existing relationships with media contacts
- Strong, collaborative leadership style
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Versatility to be both a self-starter who takes initiative and a strong team member
- Strong attention to details, highly organized, and able to meet strict deadlines
- High standard of honesty and able to maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Endorses and is motived by the guiding principles, mission and vision of the Roundtable
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field such as communications, journalism, or marketing
- Strong computer skills; excellent command of MS Office and Outlook; experience with a CRM database (Microsoft D365, Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, etc.) is a plus
Travel: up to 10 percent of time for Roundtable events. All travel will be domestic.
