Organization: The Philanthropy Roundtable’s mission is to foster excellence in philanthropy, to protect philanthropic freedom, to assist donors in achieving their philanthropic intent, and to help donors advance liberty, opportunity, and personal responsibility in America and abroad.
Since 1991, The Philanthropy Roundtable has served individual philanthropists and foundations that are refining their philanthropic strategies to maximize the impact of their resources, as well as emerging donors and entrepreneurs who are developing their philanthropic plans. The Roundtable creates an environment where philanthropists learn about effective giving strategies and benefit from others’ experiences in a wide array of areas—ultimately helping them to make transformative investments that have a significant impact on some of America’s most pressing problems. The Roundtable currently assists over 600 members, primarily foundations and generous families. In Fall 2019, the board of directors will approve a new five-year strategic plan.
Job Summary: Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President serves as a member of the leadership team and plays an important role in making strategic decisions for the organization. This position, in partnership with the Chief Operating Officer and President, is responsible for all fundraising activities. A successful candidate, using the organization’s strategic plan, will determine how the organization can build relationships with high net worth individuals to grow the organization’s resources to meet its programmatic goals.
The organization’s current funding profile is primarily centered around foundation grants. A top priority for the Vice President will be to identify and build fundraising opportunities with individual donors using the membership program, direct mail, donor communications, personal outreach through regionally focused development staff, and/or giving clubs.
An important priority is to find a capable leader who can manage and grow the existing capacities of the current department while encouraging a strong and vibrant development culture and implementing new strategies to meet revenue goals year over year. Increasing membership—and especially increasing the number of individual donors engaged and giving to the Roundtable—will be an important metric of success.
The Vice President will advise the President, Program Directors, and other senior leadership on strategic donor interactions. He or she may also manage relationships with a portfolio of donors and will interact with current and potential donors to the Roundtable, but the initial focus of the role will be strategy, growth, management, and execution.
The ideal candidate will be based in The Philanthropy Roundtable’s downtown Washington, D.C. office. Exceptionally strong candidates working virtually from elsewhere with frequent travel to Washington, D.C. will also be considered.
Job Duties: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the development team including foundation grants, high-dollar direct mail, a membership program, donor portfolios and moves management, and a new regional donor engagement program
- Manage up to President, Program Directors, and other senior leadership with strategic donor interactions and moves management
- Direct, mentor, and hire exceptional development talent; the current team consists of three development staff members, but this number is expected to grow under the Vice President’s tenure
- Expand efforts to identify, approach, and actively cultivate new donors who could become involved with the Roundtable
- Propose and execute creative new tactics for the organization to further engage donors
- Work closely with marketing and communications team to develop consistent messaging and collateral material used in serving members and in fundraising
- Work closely with internal staff and consultants to improve database and other systems for fundraising needs
- Work closely with the COO and Director of Finance & HR to develop and oversee the development department’s budget and revenue targets
- Minimum of ten years development experience with exposure to several facets of fundraising including high dollar direct mail, membership program/donor clubs/similar donor groups, donor communications, major gifts cultivation, and the foundation grant proposal process.
- Demonstrable track record of successfully cultivating and growing donor relationships
- Strong, practiced leadership style that can promote a vibrant development culture and positively engage current team members while seeking new talent to grow the team and meet development needs
- Experience constructing, articulating, and implementing annual strategic development plan
- Experience managing up to other organizational leaders regarding development tasks
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to communicate and collaborate well with different departments of the organization
- Versatility to be both a strong team member and self-starter who takes initiative
- Strong attention to details and highly organized
- High standard of honesty and able to maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Understand and support The Philanthropy Roundtable’s mission and vision
- Bachelor’s degree
- Strong computer skills; excellent command of MS Office, Outlook, and SharePoint; experience with a CRM database (Microsoft D365, Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, etc.) is required
Travel: up to 20 percent of time for Roundtable events and donor meetings. All travel will be domestic.
