The American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) is seeking an experienced researcher or policy expert with deep knowledge of and a demonstrated track record of contributing to the classical liberal, free market, and American constitutional tradition of liberty and limited government to join AIER’s Defending Freedom and Combatting Collectivism Initiative.
The holder of this position will help implement a strategic vision through producing research (articles, white papers, and op-eds) for policy and public audiences as well as engaging in public speaking and media outreach.
This position will also entail working with a team of researchers and policy experts in this vertical and contributing to collaborative efforts across AIER at our campus in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of producing high-quality research; and/or policy papers; and/or public-facing intellectual engagement that promote the ideals of a free society. Core research areas for this position include (but are not limited to) law and economics, the administrative state, regulation, American constitutionalism, stakeholder capitalism, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), classical liberalism and modern American conservatism. Strong public intellectual and academic writing, public speaking, and editorial skills are highly desired. Candidates looking to conduct mostly academic scholarship will not be a strong fit for this position given our everyman educational mission. But those looking to influence other “influencers” and our broader society are especially welcome.
On a daily basis, the position’s expectations include producing high quality written material suitable for publication in scholarly, public intellectual, policy, and everyman venues; appearing in media outlets; representing AIER at conferences/public events; working with a team of researchers, policy experts, and research associates on collaborative projects and programming; mentoring junior research employees and visitors; and participating in the intellectual life of the AIER campus.
Location: Great Barrington, MA preferred, but hybrid on-site/remote arrangements possible. Details of hybrid/remote work are to be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Expectations:
- Work in an active, public-facing research and educational initiative.
- Produce high-quality research and policy publications.
- Produce articles and op-eds for everyman and popular audiences.
- Contribute to intellectual and public engagement on a broad range of issues relevant to AIER’s mission.
- Collaborate with research team toward a shared vision of a free society.
- Mentor student visitors and junior research affiliates.
- Help organize research, student, and policy conferences and events around issues related to AIER’s mission.
- Participate in public-facing speaking engagements, conference programs, and media around issues related to AIER’s mission.
- Willing to travel domestically and occasionally internationally.
- Knowledge of output and outcome measurement.
Qualifications and Skills:
- PhD (in economics, political science, political economy, or a closely related discipline) or a JD are desirable. Individuals with a master’s degree and/or a demonstrated level of research competence along with substantial professional experience (three+ years) in writing and speaking on themes associated with the position will be seriously considered.
- A minimum of 3 years of employment experience in a research institution; or policy-oriented think-tank; or similar institutional setting.
- Substantial publication record (books, articles, intellectual magazines, white papers, op-eds).
- Evidence of willingness and ability to write for everyman and popular audiences.
- A record of public engagement including print/TV/radio/internet and public-facing events.
- Experience in collaborative research and educational programming with a team of researchers and policy experts.
- Strong familiarity with core areas of inquiry relevant to the initiative: e.g., law and economics, the administrative state, American constitutionalism, regulation, free market economics, stakeholder capitalism, and DEI.
- Philosophical alignment with AIER’s mission.
- Willing to travel domestically and occasionally internationally. Estimated travel: 20%; candidates working remotely may need to travel more.
