The Snider Foundation is a private family foundation located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania with two generations of family members currently serving on the Board of Directors. Funding areas include: 1) promoting and preserving American values of limited government, individual and economic liberty, and free and private enterprise; 2) ensuring Jewish survival by combatting antisemitism and existential threats to Israel; and 3) enriching local communities.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Officer, Jewish Culture and Survival will coordinate the due diligence process for our program area focused on fighting antisemitism and supporting pro-Israel causes. He or she will work closely with Board Members, the Executive Director, and Foundation staff to understand Ed Snider’s vision and implement the strategy developed by the Board by identifying and evaluating potential grantees. We are seeking a mission-focused, strategic, personable, self-starter to join our highly collaborative and entrepreneurial team to make a positive impact through philanthropy.
The ideal candidate will be based in the Philadelphia area, or willing to relocate, and work from The Snider Foundation’s Bryn Mawr office. We will also consider exceptional candidates based in the greater Washington, DC or New York City areas who can work virtually and travel to the Bryn Mawr office for one to two days per week.
- Manage a portfolio of existing grantees, establishing a close working relationship with key leadership and staff from those organizations.
- Investigate new organizations identified by Board Members and identify new, mission-aligned organizations according to priorities and guidance set by the Board of Directors.
- Thoroughly review grant requests, reports, audited financials, 990s and other relevant materials provided by applicants or made publicly available. Conduct site visits and check-in calls to evaluate impact and progress. Ensure grantees are aligned with The Snider Foundation’s mission and report any potential conflicts to the Executive Director.
- Prepare concise summary reports using existing templates on all existing and prospective grantees based on established guidelines and assessment areas to present to the Board.
- Use judgment and seek guidance to help connect grantees to resources in a manner consistent with donor intent.
- Ensure the grantmaking timeline is met annually for the Jewish Culture & Survival program area.
- Develop an understanding of Ed Snider’s donor intent and Board interests. Work with the staff to apply these to the Jewish Culture & Survival program area.
- Build a working knowledge of the Foundation’s core principles, grantmaking guidelines, bylaws, and other policies and apply them to the Jewish Culture & Survival program area.
- Research and apply best practices in philanthropy, sharing relevant knowledge with the staff.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration between program areas.
- Working collaboratively with the grants team, capture and track specific data about our grantees for our donor database.
- Prepare requested grant statistics, reports, and occasional presentations to help the Board understand and analyze giving patterns in the Jewish Culture & Survival program area.
External and Internal Communications
- Work closely with the Executive Director to understand the Board’s vision for the Jewish Culture & Survival program area, supporting the Foundation’s mission priority of family togetherness.
- Develop a deep knowledge and understanding of the issues impacting the program area, including news and current events, and share relevant information with the staff and Board of Directors.
- Build relationships with counterparts at like-minded foundations to learn about mutual areas of interest and potential opportunities for partnership.
- Represent The Snider Foundation at events and conferences as approved.
- Provide support and suggestions to the Executive Director on ways to improve grant cycle processes and grantmaking strategies.
- Work collaboratively with operations staff to ensure overall effectiveness of all Foundation functions.
Skills and Qualifications
- At least four years of experience including philanthropic or nonprofit work.
- Philosophical alignment with and passion for the values of the Foundation.
- Experience with/knowledge of Jewish issues strongly preferred.
- Ability to analyze and summarize a significant amount of information in a concise manner for Board communications.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work closely in a supportive team environment.
- Good judgment and discretion.
- Humility and adaptability; willingness to implement the intentions of Ed Snider and the Snider family members’ philanthropic goals.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong editing skills.
- Self-motivated, highly dependable, ability to work independently with attention to detail.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure, and manage multiple simultaneous inputs.
- Proficient with computer and office systems (particularly Excel), grants management software and other database management systems.
- Willingness to travel as needed for due diligence.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
Salary and Benefits
