You: A skilled communicator with prior experience in media relations and a proven track record of developing relationships with journalists and thought leaders. You live and breathe the news of the day and you know what makes the media tick. You constantly dream up new and creative ways to capture a journalist’s attention during a chaotic news cycle. You have a deep appreciation and passion for individual liberty.
Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in, and passionate for, the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.
Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record at the U.S. Supreme Court, with 17 victories out of 19 cases litigated at the Court. We also have more than a hundred active cases across the nation.
We are a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next-generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game.
Here’s what you get to do in this role:
You will be a critical member of our communications team, collaboratively working to build and maintain trusted, positive, and productive relationships with media outlets.
You will focus on PLF’s separation of powers practice. Our legal work aims to reinforce the structure of government envisioned in the Constitution, which is the main protector of individual liberty and guarantee of democratic accountability.
This role reports to the Media Director, Kate Pomeroy and can be executed in one of PLF’s offices or virtually anywhere in the United States.
Your specific job duties will likely include:
- Building and maintaining friendly and productive relationships with reporters, bloggers, television bookers and producers, columnists, editorial staff, and legislative communication professionals
- Pitching PLF story ideas to the media
- Handling inbound press inquiries in coordination with the media team
- Tracking and responding to developing stories related to PLF issues
- Organizing press conferences, press availabilities, media briefings, teleconferences, and other press or Capitol Hill events
- Drafting press releases, advisories, talking points, blog content, position statements, and other written products, as needed
- Editing op-eds and other media content for messaging consistency and accuracy
This role is ideal for someone with:
- 2+ years of experience in PR/media relations
- A relentless drive to proactively pitch media and secure coverage of PLF
- Previous work with legal or governmental affairs is a plus
- Excellent communication skills—being able to write and speak concisely and persuasively
- The ability to handle multiple assignments at once, work quickly, and meet deadlines on time
- The ability to travel approximately 10-15%
- A team-oriented, can-do attitude and the willingness to pitch in however needed
- Interest in, and basic understanding of, PLF’s separation of powers practice
