You: An inquisitive, organized, and self-motivated professional who knows the principles of liberty and seeks to advance them. You are collaborative, enjoy research, and have strong written and oral communication skills.
Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, some legislators and other policymakers want guidance and help to make positive change. And like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in and passionate for the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.
Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record in the United States Supreme Court, with 18 victories out of 20 cases litigated at the Court. We also have more than a hundred active cases across the nation, a growing number of legislative and administrative policy wins, and increasing engagement with thought leaders.
We are a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game.
Here’s what you get to do in this role:
You’ll work with the Constitutional Scholarship team, which develops and advances legal theories to prepare the ground for courts and policymakers to adopt PLF’s solutions. You’ll provide a mix of project coordination, research support, and administrative assistance, and report to the director of Constitutional Scholarship.
Your specific job duties likely will include:
- Providing research support for journal articles, opinion pieces, podcasts, and other projects produced by Constitutional Scholarship fellows.
- Assisting with logistics for Capitol Hill briefings, workshops, and other events and submitting and tracking reimbursements for travel and other event expenses.
- Conducting research for legal policy reform efforts at the state and federal levels.
- Coordinating the publication process for research projects.
- Hiring and supervising interns.
Qualifications for this role include:
- 1-3 years of professional experience, including internships.
- Familiarity with PLF’s primary litigation areas.
- An understanding of contemporary policy debates.
- Superb organizational skills.
- Attention to detail and a high level of initiative.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a track record of being a team player.
- Ability to travel 15-25%, depending on current location.
- Experience with Asana or similar project management tools is a plus.
This role is ideal for a part-time law student or someone with similar professional research experience. A self-starter in this role could take on increasing responsibilities, such as writing and other independent projects. Regular travel for events and to the Arlington, VA office will be required.
