About the Role
The Platte Institute is searching for a Communications Director to execute and make continuous improvements to the organization’s content strategy, including the Platte Institute’s digital offerings, traditional media, and events. The Communications Director is both a spokesperson for the organization and a strategist who develops effective ways to connect the Platte Institute’s accomplished and talented team—and the Nebraskans we serve—with the wider public, the media, and policymakers.
If you don’t like writing, this is not the job for you. But we’re not looking for someone to simply take dictation. The right candidate will enjoy learning from their audiences, advising our team on how to devote our resources to their highest and best use, and setting priorities for our content in a crowded media environment.
Nebraskans have lots of concerns and questions about why our state’s policies are the way they are. Our Communications Director makes sure the Platte Institute gets invited into those conversations by using insights from our audiences to create products that offer valuable answers and solutions. Our website at PlatteInstitute.org, Jim Vokal’s weekly Platte Institute email, and the Nebraskanomics podcast are just a few examples of products the Communications Director manages to make it easier for Nebraskans to understand the issues and to take action.
The Communications Director has the opportunity to collaborate with professionals in every field and discipline of media, public policy, and nonprofit management, providing you the tools to build a more effective organization, and a career where you can use your creativity to choose your own adventure.
This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is located in Omaha, Nebraska. We will consider a virtual/hybrid option for the right candidate. Occasional travel in Nebraska and to out-of-state events is required as part of the role.
The Communications Director will be expected to:
- Produce and supervise the creation and distribution of Platte Institute content, including blogs, emails, podcasts, in-person and virtual meetings, owned, paid, and earned media
- Work in concert with CEO, CSO, development, community engagement, policy, and government relations staff to incorporate content strategies into the organization’s annual strategic plan
- Develop or maintain standardized content practices for the organization, including writing style, brand guidelines, messaging frameworks, and digital content tools
- Maintain communications with Nebraska media outlets and organizations and track internal and external trends in the Nebraska news cycle
- Gather analytics, market research, and survey data to make informed decisions about content strategy and issue campaigns
- Answer questions about the Platte Institute and its campaigns, or connect audiences with Platte Institute team members or other resources providing answers
- Provide communications assistance to policy, development, or other departments as assigned
The ideal Communications Director candidate would meet the following qualifications:
- Strong commitment to the principles of limited government, free enterprise, and the Platte Institute’s mission of removing barriers for Nebraskans
- 2-5 years of experience in a public-facing and/or content creation role in a policy, nonprofit, media and communications, or corporate setting (a candidate with experience in Nebraska is preferred but not required)
- Proficiency with digital communications tools, including MailChimp, WordPress, Zoom, Adobe Suite, social media platforms, and
- A portfolio demonstrating past content-related work, whether written, audio, or video
- Experience working with media outlets, executives, political candidates, or figures seeking media coverage
- Working knowledge of public policy topics with a desire to learn more
- Well-honed emotional intelligence and discipline
- Experience working independently to follow through on time-sensitive tasks
- Interest in collaborating with colleagues in other nonprofit & policy disciplines
Salary and Compensation
The salary range for this position is $70,000-$85,000, depending on experience. The Platte Institute offers employer-sponsored health, dental, and vision benefits, including a Flexible Spending Account, a retirement account with an employer match, and a generous Paid Time Off policy.
