About the New Civil Liberties Alliance
NCLA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit civil rights group founded by prominent legal scholar Philip Hamburger to protect constitutional freedoms from violations by the Administrative State. NCLA’s public-interest litigation and other pro bono advocacy strive to tame the unlawful power of state and federal agencies and to foster a new civil liberties movement that will help restore Americans’ fundamental rights.
About the Major Gifts Manager Opening
This position is ideal for someone wanting to join a growing, collaborative, engaged alliance. As NCLA’s name suggests, it is committed to creating a movement of lawyers and others to defend civil liberties in a new way: constitutional litigation to remove administrative agencies’ unlawful tools and tactics.
The major gifts manager must be deeply committed to NCLA’s mission and possess sufficient experience and wherewithal to recruit major donors alongside the Director of Development and President of NCLA. This position offers a unique opportunity to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States from a position in a civil liberties organization.
The Manager of Major Gifts should be able to work proactively alongside the Director of Development and other senior leaders. NCLA has a substantial development program already. We are seeking a manager of major gifts who will bring experience and skills to help advance a culture of excellence, entrepreneurial zeal, and strategic action.

Alternatively, we will consider exceptional candidates living elsewhere in the country who want to work virtually. This full-time position reports to the Director of Development. This position will travel (approximately 10% for local candidates; 30% for virtual candidates) as needed for fundraising purposes.
Responsibilities:
- Recruit and maintain individual NCLA donors, providing regular cultivation for each donor level in consultation with the Director of Development. This includes regular updates and progress reports to major donors, demonstrating the impact of their contributions and the organization’s effective use of funds.

- Inform donors about various ways to support NCLA that will address their philanthropic and financial goals.
- Maintain accurate and updated donor information in Salesforce when communicating with donors.
- Obtain donor testimonials for direct mail, the NCLA website, and other marketing materials.
- Create/write compelling fundraising proposals and presentations tailored to individual donors, highlighting the alignment between their philanthropic goals and NCLA’s mission.
- Research & evaluate individual donors’ financial capabilities.
- Help identify, recruit, and grow new supporters for NCLA, focusing on adding members at NCLA’s major giving levels.
- Support and participate in meetings with existing NCLA donors to solicit and steward their support.
- Collaborate with the President and Director of Development to analyze demographic and other data, identifying the most appropriate prospects within the donor base and public for major and planned gifts.
- Maintain a deep understanding of NCLA focus areas.
- Fulfill any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Development.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 years of non-profit fundraising experience.
- Proven track record of successfully soliciting and securing gifts from individuals; experience with planned giving or foundations a plus.
- Strong oral and written communication as well as listening skills.
- Must be a self-starter, demonstrating strong initiative and capacity to manage time and competing priorities and meet timelines/deadlines.
- Persuasive writing and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate NCLA’s mission and impact effectively.
- Personable and flexible.
- High professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality in handling sensitive donor information.
- Comfortable and efficient working in a dynamic organization and being a team player supporting others.
