California Justice Center, a nonprofit law firm, seeks an attorney to join our growing litigation team. We pursue legal actions designed to restore citizen control of government in line with constitutional principles by supporting workers and families over special interests.

About the Senior Counsel Opening

The successful candidate will work on impact litigation, constitutional challenges, administrative-law disputes, public records matters, and other legal actions advancing individual rights and limited government in California. Our current litigation includes cases focused on protecting parental rights and workers’ rights and cases fighting government corruption and overreach.

This position offers the opportunity to help shape California law through high-impact litigation affecting millions of residents.

We seek lawyers who believe that constitutional rights are not self-enforcing and who are prepared to defend them in court. This is a senior counsel role reporting to the President, with the expectation of leading cases from intake through appeal.

The Senior Counsel can work virtually from anywhere in the United States, but California residency is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and litigate cases in state and federal courts
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and legal memoranda
  • Conduct legal research and factual investigations
  • Participate in strategic litigation planning
  • Work with clients, policymakers, and coalition partners
  • Assist with public education and media engagement related to significant cases when appropriate

Qualifications

  • Active membership in the California State Bar preferred but not required; a candidate without admission to the California State Bar will be expected to gain admission quickly if hired
  • JD from an accredited institution
  • 5-15 years of legal experience strongly preferred
  • Experience in a major law firm, government law office, appellate practice, nonprofit litigation firm, or comparable litigation environment preferred
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and advocacy skills
  • Ability to manage complex litigation with substantial independence
  • Commitment to the principles and protections embodied in the United States Constitution
  • Demonstrated interest in public-interest litigation and the advancement of individual liberty
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time for occasional meetings and court appearances

Compensation

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
