About the Role:
The Director of Public Policy will direct CCHFs public policy, lobbying, and government relations. The purpose of this position is to advance the free-market public policy agenda of CCHF at the federal level and at the state level across the country.

The preferred location for this position is in St. Paul, Minnesota, where CCHF is headquartered, with an option to work remotely two days per week.  Exceptional candidates will be considered for a fully virtual office. Depending on primary location, the Director of Public Policy will be expected to travel to Washington D.C. or out-of-state approximately 5-10% of the year.

Responsibilities:
Major areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain thorough and ongoing tracking of relevant federal and state legislation
  • Conduct research on policy directives and statutory requirements
  • Cultivate allied relationships to identify opportunities for fueling policy change
  • Schedule, prepare and attend meetings with state and federal policymakers
  • Manage and work together with the CCHF State Policy Manager
  • Prepare and provide testimony for legislative hearings
  • Write legislative drafts, reports, research projects, policy papers, and memos
  • Advance creative strategies for public engagement
  • Arrange press conferences and legislative briefings as needed
  • Collect and manage specific data for reports and projects
  • Draft model legislation
  • Communicate CCHFs policy and legislative issues and progress in newsletters, emails, and events
  • Regularly update the president, staff, and board on the status of key projects
  • Other projects as directed by the President

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent and demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, including using correct sentence structure as well as the ability to communicate complex policy issues in a clear and compelling manner
  • Strong understanding of the legislative process
  • Demonstrable organizational skills
  • Critical and strategic thinking
  • Demonstrable ability to lead others
  • Strong reading comprehension skills and commitment to thorough research methods and policy analysis
  • Ability to speak to groups of any size
  • Demonstrated experience in research and writing (legislative drafting is a plus)
  • Demonstrable skill in locating and accessing legal and legislative documents at the state and federal level
  • Personable presence in conversations, presentations, and discussions
  • Familiarity with common PC and Mac software, including MS Office
  • Commitment to medical freedom, constitutional integrity, and free-market principles

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in public policy, law, government relations, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience lobbying at the state or federal level
  • One or more bills or amendments introduced or enacted by working with state or federal lawmakers
  • Experience in health care, health policy, or privacy rights
  • Experience in event coordination, press conferences, and legislative briefings
  • Bachelors degree highly preferred
