About the John Locke Foundation
The John Locke Foundation (Locke) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) research institute named after the influential English philosopher John Locke. Our mission is to promote individual liberty, limited constitutional government, and free-market solutions in North Carolina. We are dedicated to conducting rigorous research, advocating for sound public policies, and fostering informed public discourse. The Foundation is funded by a diverse network of individuals, foundations, and corporations who share our commitment to upholding the principles of liberty and constitutional governance principles. About the Role
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide regular updates and reports to the VP of Development; keeping the development team aware of upcoming meetings, submission deadlines, events, and other opportunities to advance our strategic goals
- Collaborate with the development team in strategizing with regard to researching and cultivating prospective donors, developing donor communications materials, outreach opportunities, and events
- Build and maintain relationships with a portfolio of 100-125 mid-level donors to ensure the donors define and accomplish their philanthropic goals in alignment with the organizational priorities
- Develop personalized stewardship plans to enhance donor retention and upgrade potential
Qualifications:
- 0-2+ years of professional office experience
- Alignment to free-market ideas and enthusiastic commitment to the mission of Locke
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to communicate our mission and build meaningful relationships with prospective and current major donors
- Sales or customer service experience is helpful but not necessary – this is a great opportunity for someone looking to get into development with a high-performing team
- Ability and willingness to travel within NC up to 50% (rarely overnight)
- Experience with Salesforce (or a similar CRM) preferred but not required
- Highly motivated with demonstrated follow-through and ability to meet or exceed goals while managing multiple projects

Location
The Development Officer will report to the Vice President of Development. The Development Officer can work from Raleigh, NC, or virtual in NC, SC, TN, VA, or GA. Candidates residing outside of NC should be prepared to travel within the state as needed for meetings and events.
