Donor Relations Manager – Institute for Justice – Arlington, VA

February 10, 2022

About the Institute for Justice:

The Institute for Justice, a public interest law firm, is on the front lines fighting to end widespread abuses of government power and secure the rights that allow all Americans to pursue their dreams. We focus on the areas of the law that provide the foundation for a free society, and we win three out of every four cases we file despite the challenges inherent in litigating against the government, an effort made possible by the financial support of nearly 10,000 individual donors.

About the Donor Relations Manager Opening:

In order to advance the mission of the Institute for Justice, the development office exists to build and cultivate strong relationships with supporters by partnering with them to achieve their philanthropic interests. IJ’s development team is seeking an experienced fundraising, marketing, or communications professional to fill the role of Donor Relations Manager at our headquarters office in Arlington, VA.

This position will be responsible for overseeing the growth and expansion of the membership in each of IJ’s midpoint giving programs, with a keen focus on ensuring that every donor gets the care and attention that are the hallmarks of IJ’s development program. He/she will constantly seek ways to do things better and create exceptional experiences for IJ donors in order to increase their connection to, and investment in, IJ’s important work defending everyday people’s freedom.

The Donor Relations Manager is responsible for managing and growing three IJ giving clubs:

  • Partners Club (for donors giving $1,000-$9,999),
  • Guardians Circle (for donors giving $10,000-$24,999), and
  • Four Pillars Society (for donors who have included IJ in their will or other long-term financial plans)

The Donor Relations Manager position is based in Arlington, VA but can work remotely up to two days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage IJ’s mid-point programs for $1,000-$24,999 givers and IJ’s planned giving program through marketing mailings and strong cultivation plans while ensuring the execution and administration of engagement happens in a timely manner and on-budget.
  • Implement 3-4 IJ LIVE teleconferences or other events to engage giving club donors
  • Work with the Director of Individual Giving to identify and plan engagement strategies with prospective donors
  • Participate in strategy, planning, and execution of IJ’s periodic Partner’s Retreats and other donor cultivation events
  • Supervise Donor Relations Assistant, including conducting regular check-in meetings, helping set goals and strategy, reviewing work product, and providing general guidance
  • Draft summaries for department planning meetings and for reports to IJ’s board of directors

Required Qualifications:

  • An obsessive desire to win; you are frustrated with complacency
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with staff, donors, and others
  • 2-5 years of experience in fundraising, marketing, communications, or a related field
  • Innovative and entrepreneurial
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise, and personalized correspondence to a variety of audiences
  • Experience with Salesforce or another CRM / donor database product
  • Command of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
  • Superb attention-to-detail
  • Ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects and tasks
  • Commitment to promoting individual liberty and challenging government abuse

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Personnel management experience a plus
  • Experience with giving clubs and/or planned giving programs
  • Interest in and understanding of data management and analysis for assessing club performance and identifying new opportunities to cultivate and solicit support

How to Apply:

Qualified candidates should submit the following application materials in one PDF file:

  • Resume
  • Cover Letter detailing your interest in the position, Institute for Justice’s mission, and your salary requirements
