About the Opening
Have you cut your teeth in the journalism world, and want to use your skills to examine deeply the most important issues of the day? Do you aspire to telling stories that make a difference and lead to meaningful change? Are “government” and “accountability” words that, in your mind, deserve to go together like “peach” and “cobbler”? This is the job for you.
The Foundation launched our Investigative Journalism Initiative in 2021 working with freelancers, but we’ve decided to take the next step and hire a full-time journalist on staff. This new team member will work with our Communications Director to identify, report and present high-impact stories on a range of topics: from education and healthcare to public spending and business regulation. Bring your multimedia tool box, because we want to tell each story in the medium that fits it best, whether that’s video or the written word, print or online.
The Foundation has a longstanding and well-earned reputation for accuracy; our first rule is to get our facts right. Our second rule is to stick to ideas, not personal insults. This role is for a watchdog, not an attack dog. That said, as we stick to ideas, we aren’t pulling any punches: We want hard-hitting stories, because the people of Georgia are counting on us. And while we are clear about our principles – we’re for free enterprise, limited government, individual liberty and personal responsibility – we aren’t looking to create “conservative” or “alternative” journalism. Think of it as more “supplemental” journalism: We’re tackling stories that existing news outlets simply aren’t covering. In fact, we distribute our stories to newspapers across the state and encourage them to publish our work.
The successful candidate will have the clips to show journalistic aptitude and integrity, range and creativity. You’ll need to be comfortable sifting through databases and skilled at getting real, live people to tell their stories. The human element is essential to the work we want to produce. Besides longer, investigative pieces, we’ll lean on this new team member to produce some shorter stories such as blog posts, either as follow-up stories or standalones on lesser topics. We also need someone who not only writes clean copy but can help with editing colleagues’ work. Every member of our team is willing to pitch in as necessary on whatever needs to be done, because we are all driven to work on behalf of Georgians who may not have anyone else speaking up for them.
This position will require some travel around the state, depending on the story, and it is based in Georgia – although not necessarily Atlanta. All of our team members work remotely at least part of the time. The right person for this job will be a self-starter who spends most days out of the office because that’s where the stories are.
- Work with the Communications Director to plan coverage
- Identify, plan and execute high-impact investigative stories, and other content as needed
- Use the tools necessary – writing, photography, videos, etc. – to tell each story the right way
- Collaborate with colleagues on other projects as necessary to pursue the Foundation’s strategic objectives
- Develop and work with human sources, as well as publicly available data, to tell stories in the most compelling way possible
- Help with copyediting colleagues’ work
- Maintain the Foundation’s reputation for non-partisanship, attention to detail and factual accuracy, and avoidance of personal/ad hominem attacks

Professional Skills and Qualifications:
- At least 3-5 years of journalism experience
- Ability to travel throughout Georgia as often as necessary for news stories
