The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) is seeking a State Government Affairs Manager for Florida. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a passion for good public policy and experience working with the state legislature. The right person for this role is an exceptional communicator who is organized and detail oriented.
The State Government Affairs Manager will be responsible for all of FGA’s government affairs operations in Florida, including serving as the primary policy and political point of contact in the state, cultivating stakeholder relationships, managing on-the-ground contractors, and directing legislative initiatives.
What does a typical day look like? In this role, no two days will look identical. One day the Manager will meet with leaders within the gubernatorial administration, with allied groups, or with a key committee chairman. Other days he or she will draft follow-up memos for meetings and prepare briefing documents for FGA’s CEO to use in stakeholder meetings. Perhaps the next day the Manager will submit requests with internal teammates to get legislative language or committee testimony drafted.
This role requires adept project management skills, prompt follow-up habits, and the ability to disseminate information quickly and accurately. At a high level, the Manager will develop an efficient and effective system to execute, track, and win on multiple policy reform priorities, while building trusted relationships with policymakers and their staff.
For the exceptional candidate, FGA will consider virtual applicants. However, the government affairs manager will be required to be present in Tallahassee with frequency. For that reason, candidates who live in or close to Tallahassee are strongly preferred.
An ideal candidate will have:
- 3-5 years of relevant legislative and/or advocacy experience
- Ability to travel several times monthly throughout Florida
- A track record of successfully managing projects, scheduling meetings, and coordinating logistics
- Keen attention to detail
- Solid understanding of the state legislative and policymaking process
- Ability to communicate with internal teammates and external partners in a way that builds rapport and trust
- Flexible and able to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Capable of moving between tasks with precision and able to quickly reassess priorities

Roles and Responsibilities
The State Government Affairs Manager will have five primary responsibilities:
- Serve as the internal and external point person for all government affairs operations in the state and establish him or herself as the recognized face of FGA in Florida.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with all relevant legislative, executive, agency, and allied third party organization stakeholders.
- Attend all relevant committee hearings, coordinate testimony, identify and request needed collateral, take notes, and provide follow-up information to committee members on relevant issues.
- Serve as the primary resource for policymakers and legislative and executive staff to provide information to advance legislation and other reform initiatives.
- Manage contractors in the process of shepherding legislation and other policy initiatives through the process from start to finish.
Timing, Location and Compensation
FGA is seeking to fill this position as soon as possible. Candidates must reside in the state of Florida to be considered. This position requires several trips per month throughout the state of Florida. Additional travel includes one team meeting per quarter as well as two yearly staff meetings. Travel expenses are covered. FGA offers salary and benefits that are very competitive, including a retirement program, a health benefit, and a generous paid leave plan.
