About the Opening
State Policy Network seeks a Director of Philanthropic Development to join our team. This position is ideal for a pro-liberty, entrepreneurial candidate with an interest in helping members of the SPN Network continue to raise the bar for their fundraising efforts and cultivate the skills and strategies necessary to build a revenue base to support transformational impact today and tomorrow.
The Director of Philanthropic Development will report to our Senior Director of Philanthropic & Leadership Strategy. The Director of Philanthropic Development’s role advances SPN’s mission and strategic objectives by helping nurture and empower development leaders within the SPN Network, fostering strong philanthropic organizational cultures throughout the Network, and providing the training and resources needed to help state-based organizations build transformational donor relationships and expand fundraising capacity in order to execute their mission and achieve result.
The Director of Philanthropic Development can be based in SPN’s Arlington, Virginia headquarters or in a virtual office. This is a full-time position that includes 20% travel.
The Director’s main responsibilities will include:
- Developing and driving key pieces of SPN’s Development Training programs
- Identifying and assessing the development needs of organizations within the SPN Network and helping to target resources, training, and coaching accordingly
- Working directly with organizations on comprehensive development planning, including major donor procurement and retention, general membership, grants, legacy gifts, direct mail, and events
- Performing site visits, assessing progress, and participating in strategic development planning
- Helping identify and cultivate the next generation of development professionals for the state-based freedom movement; helping state-based organizations with talent recruitment and retention, including advising on job searches and onboard efforts
- Helping to develop and track measures of SPN program effectiveness
- Advising organizations on effective data management and evaluation of development initiatives
- Helping maintain a thriving development community within the SPN Network through SPN’s member portal, events, connections, etc.
- Planning and executing development trainings and SPN Annual Meeting activities focused on furthering development-related knowledge and skills
- Actively researching new development-oriented tools and trends that may advance these goals
- Estimated travel for this role: 20%
- 5-7 + years of work experience
- Significant fundraising experience, including donor relations, major gifts, and strategic development work
- Experience in managing a development department is strongly preferred
- Experience in the free-market nonprofit sector strongly preferred
- Alignment with and passion for State Policy Network’s mission
- Entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic
- Team-minded but willing and able to constructively challenge ideas and practices
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects effectively
- Strong analytical skills, outstanding organizational skills, and superb attention to detail
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work in fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Experience using Salesforce is a plus
- Ability to communicate with co-workers and business contacts in a courteous and professional manner; exhibit grace under pressure
