The American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) is seeking an experienced scholar with a demonstrated track record in the classical liberal and free market intellectual traditions to lead a new initiative on Economics and Economic Freedom. The leader of this initiative will help to craft a strategic vision of original scholarly research, educational programming, and public/media outreach, while working with a team of scholars at our campus in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. This position will also entail supervising a team of researchers in this vertical and contributing to collaborative efforts across AIER.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of producing high-quality research that can have a real world impact and public-facing intellectual engagement on classical liberal ideas. Core research areas for this position include (but are not limited to) free market approaches to fiscal/tax policy, regulation, measurement of markets and economic freedom, applied Public Choice approaches to public policy, and the philosophical case for a free society.
On a daily basis, the position’s expectations include producing high quality scholarly research; appearing in media outlets; representing AIER at conferences/public speaking events; overseeing a team of scholars and research associates on collaborative research projects and research programming; mentoring junior research employees and visitors; and participating in the intellectual life of the AIER campus.
The Director of Economics and Economic Freedom Initiative reports to the President and will have 3+ direct reports.
Ideally, the Director of Economics and Economic Freedom will work full-time from our Great Barrington, MA office. We will also consider exceptional candidates working virtually who can spend 7-10 business days per month in our Great Barrington office.
Expectations:
- Develop and lead an active, public-facing research initiative in Economics and Economic Freedom
- Produce high quality research publications for a range of outlets
- Supervise a team of 3 researchers
- Contribute to intellectual and public engagement on a broad range of issues relevant to AIER’s mission
- Work as part of a collaborative research team toward a shared vision of a free society
- Mentor student visitors and junior research affiliates
- Organize and lead small scholarly and student conferences and workshops around issues related to AIER’s mission. Note: a typical research scholar is involved in leading/directing two such conferences per year
- Participate in public-facing speaking engagements, conference programs, and media around issues related to AIER’s mission.
- Travel occasionally for conferences/public speaking events (if based in Great Barrington, approximate travel will be 5-10%; if working virtually, more travel will be required)
Qualifications and Skills:
- PhD in economics or a closely related discipline preferred, but not required; Masters degree or substantial relevant professional experience will be considered
- A minimum of 6 years of employment experience (10 years preferred) in an academic faculty position, or a full-time equivalent position at a scholarly research institution or policy-oriented think-tank or similar
- Substantial record of scholarly research and accompanying publications (books, articles, white papers, etc.), including evidence of an ongoing highly productive research agenda
- Evidence of willingness and ability to do high-quality intellectual and public engagement including print/TV/radio, writing for popular audiences/op-eds, and speaking at public-facing events
- Experience in leading/directing collaborative research and educational programming with a team of scholars
- Deep familiarity with core research schools within the free market and classical liberal intellectual tradition (e.g. Public Choice theory, Austrian economics, Chicago price theory, classical empiricism)
- Philosophical alignment with AIER’s mission and research objectives
