Director of Development – New Civil Liberties Alliance – Washington, DC or Virtual

April 5, 2022

new civil liberties allianceAbout the New Civil Liberties Alliance:

Founded in 2017, the New Civil Liberties Alliance is a public-interest law firm focused on bringing strategic litigation to take away the tools and tactics that the Administrative State uses to violate people’s civil liberties. Think of it as a civil libertarian alternative to the ACLU that actually cares about the rights in the Constitution. NCLA defends people’s civil liberties against near-constant assault by the agents and agencies of the Administrative State. By forcing these agencies to abide by the original form of government and liberty established by the U.S. Constitution and state constitutions, NCLA stops unlawful abuses of power. NCLA’s pro bono litigation protects the liberty threatened by administrative power, including the freedom of speech, jury rights, and due process of law.

About the Director of Development Opening:

NCLA is looking for a talented, motivated, and experienced Director of Development. The Director will play a pivotal role in NCLA’s success by enhancing and executing its strategic development plan as part of the senior leadership team. The Director will work closely with NCLA’s Executive Director and President to achieve fundraising success. The Director will also have the opportunity to expand and build his/her own team in the coming months, including hiring a Development Associate. This is a unique opportunity to work directly with the leadership of a growing and well-regarded nonprofit organization and use your skills to fight for ideas you believe in.

The Director of Development will be based in NCLA’s Washington, DC office in Dupont Circle. NCLA will also consider exceptional candidates who have proven they can raise funds remotely.

Responsibilities:

  • Enhance and execute comprehensive fundraising strategy including individual giving, foundation giving, online giving, campaigns, events, etc. to raise necessary annual revenue for NCLA
  • Identify aligned foundations, build relationships with foundation staff, and author grant proposals and timely reports championing NCLA’s work
  • Identify, cultivate, and meet with prospective major gift supporters alongside NCLA’s Executive Director
  • Implement systems for prospecting, solicitation, and graduated gift giving for all donors, including a program that involves recognition for donors at different levels
  • Cultivate current portfolio of foundations and major donors
  • Execute follow-up fundraising related to the forthcoming Fifth Anniversary Gala in June

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of fundraising experience, including 3+ years of experience in successful and verifiable solicitation of major gifts
  • Motivated and enthusiastic about NCLA’s mission to protect constitutional freedoms from the Administrative State
  • Understanding of all facets of fundraising including individual giving, foundation giving, online giving, campaigns, annual giving, and bequests
  • Willingness to travel 20%-30%
  • Ability to work from NCLA’s Washington, DC office OR proven ability to fundraise in a virtual capacity
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Must exhibit sound judgment in confidential donor matters
  • High level of organization, attention to detail and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects at one time with success and accuracy
  • CRM experience, Salesforce preferred
  • Willingness to work on any task – no matter how big or small – to get the job done
  • General knowledge of liberty space fundraising preferred
  • Fundraising event experience (e.g., annual dinner) helpful but not required

How to Apply:

Qualified candidates should submit the following application materials in one PDF file:

    • Resume
    • Cover letter detailing your interest in the position, NCLA’s mission, and your salary requirements
