You: An entrepreneurial freedom fighter passionate about strategy, planning, and performance—all the details that make an organization the best it can be. You’re not afraid to open the hood, get your hands dirty, and offer solutions to problems others might find intractable. You’re comfortable behind the scenes, knowing your success fuels everyone’s accomplishments. You are an initiative-taker, natural leader, and willing collaborator who will elevate PLF to achieve its ambition.
Them: Bureaucrats, city councils, mayors, governors, and federal agencies stripping Americans of their rights every day. There’s a lot of government overreach out there, and it’s backed by seemingly endless resources. But fortunately, like all lumbering giants, abusive government is most vulnerable when countered by individuals who act strategically and nimbly, take calculated risks, have each other’s backs, and are confident in and enthusiastic about the cause—the very sort of swashbucklers we employ in spades here at PLF.
Us: We fight back. Pacific Legal Foundation is the nation’s first and most successful public interest law firm dedicated to vindicating individual liberty. PLF has an unmatched record in the United States Supreme Court, with 18 victories out of 20 litigated at the Court. We also have nearly 200 active cases across the nation.
We are a next-generation public interest law firm. What does “next generation” mean for a legal nonprofit? It means we aren’t interested in doing the same thing as everyone else. We aspire to be the best player in a constantly changing game.
Here’s what you get to do in this role:
You’ll be focused on the day-to-day operation of the organization, all while building and maintaining our unique and dynamic internal culture to attract, develop, and retain highly talented staff.
As a key member of the senior management team, you’ll collaborate with the President & CEO, the Board, and other executive leadership to execute on the mission, plans, and policies that shape the future of PLF. You will have a significant focus on organizational effectiveness, financial stewardship, integrating departments, and ensuring the availability of the proper systems, processes, and tools.
In a nutshell, we’re seeking someone who’s bonkers about liberty, someone who is confident and magnanimous, and someone who is bold and relentless.
Getting down to brass tacks, your specific job duties likely will include:
- Overseeing the non-legal daily administration of PLF to ensure effective and efficient operations consistent with the standards, policies, and requirements of the CEO, Board of Trustees, and applicable government and regulatory agencies
- Advising the senior management team in collaborating to craft and support the long-term strategies, policies, and priorities to spur innovation and growth
- Serving as an internal leader of PLF, providing a strong day-to-day presence that promotes our unique organizational culture and values and communicating routinely about organizational goings-on
- Overseeing the management of our Talent & Culture, IT, and Administration departments, setting operational standards to ensure quality work product and efficient operations
- Directly managing three individuals (the heads of the Talent & Culture, IT, and Administration departments)
- Interacting with the Board of Trustees through meetings and periodic reporting
- Collaborating with the Development department on fundraising proposals and reports
- Occasional travel (approximately 15%)
This role is ideal for someone with:
- Demonstrated commitment to the basic principles of PLF’s mission to maximize individual liberty and an understanding of the use of litigation as a means of social change
- Ten years of progressive experience in the operations of a complex, preferably non-profit, organization, with at least some of those years participating as a member of the executive team
- Proven ability as a leader, with strong interpersonal skills, to effectively build and manage internal operations and culture
- Deep understanding of non-profit operations including administration, IT, human resources, finance and fundraising, and the ability to oversee multiple departments
- An ability to lead by conveying vision and passion to inspire action of others
- An entrepreneurial mindset with thoughtful, creative, and innovative problem-solving skills from assessment of the problem to execution of the resolution
- Knowledge of law firm operations (preferred)
