CRC is an investigative think tank and the leading source for information on left-wing/Progressive organizations and their donors. The Center examines how these groups operate and analyzes their impact on our politics and society.
The Center was established in 1984 to promote a better understanding of charities and philanthropic organizations and of how groups and causes are “captured” by the Left and used to undermine Americans’ freedoms. CRC’s journalism is grounded in principles of individual liberty, a free-market economy, and limited, constitutional government.
CRC’s specialty: “connecting the dots”—uncovering the links between nonprofit organizations, interest groups, and government policies—investigating and exposing extremism, corruption, cronyism, self-dealing, hypocrisy, and deception.

This position reports to the Vice President of Programs and Communications. The primary function of the Communications Manager/Director is to promote CRC’s research through our own publications (our monthly magazine) and through the print, radio, and television media in both DC and national media markets. This includes facilitating interviews with CRC representatives, disseminating CRC content to appropriate audiences, working with our in-house film/video producer on content and promotion, developing and maintaining strong relationships with reporters/producers/bookers, following the news cycle ad alerting appropriate staff on media opportunities, editing existing publications and products, pitching opinion editorials, stories, and other content, and monitoring/tracking appearances/media hits.
- Excellent networking and relationship-building; building relationships with the media, particularly building new relationships.
- Managing the production of CRC’s print (primarily donor-focused) magazine-style publication, under the management of the VP of Programs and Communications.
- Maintaining all appropriate media contact lists and databases (using the Meltwater platform/software/media tracking services).
- Placing opinion pieces and articles with top-level print outlets and securing interviews with staff on leading television and radio outlets.
- Writing/blogging for CRC as needed.
- Assisting the VP of Programs and Communications and the Film/Video Producer in developing an integrated marketing and communications plan for CRC.
- Copyediting all CRC products, including newsletters, outreach communications, and policy products.
- Tracking CRC’s media effectiveness, including tracking, updating, and archiving media coverage.
- Assisting with daily written and oral communications to the media (primarily) and to the general public (secondarily).
- Fielding media requests and calls; pitching stories and booking interviews (including preparing and distributing press releases and media availabilities).
Education and Experience Required
- 3-5 years of experience in communications, media relations, journalism, public relations, or as a press secretary or media relations/communications specialist. Experience in radio and TV pitching a plus.
- Superb written and oral communications skills, and demonstrably strong editing skills.
- Strong project management skills and ability to multi-task, set priorities, and follow-through.
- High sense of urgency.
- A commitment to/passion for the principles of limited government, free markets, Constitutional government, and individual liberties.
- Experience communicating about public policy issues preferred.
- A bachelor’s degree or higher.
- Proficiency in MS Office is necessary (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience in working with video and/or social media outputs (and knowledge of how to maximize the reach of both is preferred).
- A great attitude, including a strong work ethic and a commitment to working on projects directly related to the mission of the Capital Research Center.
- Experience with or interest in social media platforms/communications.
