While it’s true there are some very talented folks in between jobs right now, it’s also the case that many of the currently employed are simply refusing to explore other options. They view their present roles as safe, and they think it’s risky to take another job in these uncertain times. And why wouldn’t they? They have seen their friends take new jobs only to have those jobs eliminated six months later.
The same principle applies to relocation. People cannot easily sell their homes or incur the cost of a move, so many people are simply hunkering down in their current locations.
So what does this mean for your organization when it comes to hiring? It means you should expect searches to take some time: 4-6 weeks, and longer for executive positions. And if your organization is outside of Washington, DC, you’ll want to invest more energy trying to identify local candidates.
